Spelling

To support our teaching of spelling we use Read Write Inc. Read Write Inc is a robust, systematic spelling programme for primary aged children. The programme supports the aims of the National Curriculum to ensure that children:

  • spell new words correctly and have plenty of practise in spelling them, including exception words and homophones
  • spell words as accurately as possible using their phonic knowledge and other knowledge of spelling, such as morphology and etymology
  • are supported in understanding and applying the concepts of word structure
  • spell words that they have not yet been taught by using what they have learnt about how spelling works in English.

The teaching of phoneme-grapheme correspondence underpins this programme and also develops children’s knowledge of word families, how suffixes impact upon root words and provides mnemonics to remember the trickiest spellings.

The teaching revolves around instruction (with the help of online alien characters), partner and group practice and competitive group challenges that help children commit new words to memory.

Read Write Inc is taught in each year group for a minimum of three times a week. The teaching of the rule is then followed by consolidation of key concepts. Children will be given a mixture of words from the National Curriculum and the current week’s spelling rule to practise at home.

Children’s spelling progress is tracked through practise tests that are presented in the same format as statutory assessments in England in addition to the rising stars assessments. These are used to record and track individual children’s progress and identify units or concepts that might need to be taught again.
